Hopefully some of you will know this great little backstreet pub near Spitalfields/Aldgate. No nonsense. No tossers. Well a greedy developer has taken it over and by underhand means will probably close the pub (as they have done in other sites across London). A campaign is under way to help save the pub.

http://www.savetheduke.info/

There is also a meeting 4pm tomorrow (Tues 10th) in the pub to find out more about the development and gather political support to help save it's closure.

Don't let another part of our heritage/pub stock be sold off and developed for a quick profit by some shady shysters. If nearby come on down and have your say.

Rant over. Drink beer!

Hopefully will become a mosque for the local community to use.

Used to drink in there many moons ago when Louis and his family ran it (Jason ran a pub in Plaistow and they also took over the Turners Old Star in Wapping.) Cracking pub at the time. Toynbee St? Just off the Commercial Road.

Had a thread about it a couple of years back, apparently Louis 'Louis the spaniard' , was running a pub in Southend somewhere? Louis was proper old school West Ham.

Oh yeah next to the Brune Estate. Never been in there but would be a shame if it closed. Only a couple of hundreds yards from the City

"they also took over the Turners Old Star in Wapping."

That brought back some good memories for me as my Grandparents lived opposite the 'Old Star' in Beechey house (top floor) and we had some good Saturday nights in the Star with all the family......happy days.

Has anybody said it will become a Mosque yet?

Oh!

Been in that pub loads of times. Considering the locals are either cheap students or muslims, it's not a surprise it's under pressure.

Eddie

The locals to the Pride of Spitalfields are mostly Muslims and there is even a large Mosque just round the corner but it's always heaving when I've been in there.

Is still like a good old East End boozer with a couple of decent ales.

The whole area is facing regeneration. This pub should be listed and protected. if it was a gas silo it would be. Good luck.

I drink here fairly regularly, most miserable barmaids in the world. But a sound juke box. Too many darts teams as well

Bit a shame to see it go still...

Re: Duke of Wellington E1
I don't think it is under pressure due to lack of sales/customers - it could go on as is. Some property company (with links to another dodgy offshore company) has bought it and wants to develop the next door and pub garden into flats making the pub bit unviable - hence it will close and he can do what he wants with the whole lot.

I think it's a tied pub so new owners can also dictate the price the landlord buys the beer at and I've heard he has whacked the price of barrels up 50/60% which is another way to drive the pub out of business.

These are practices happening up and down the land meaning good pubs on prime land close down so be good to see what can be done and fight back against these cretins.

London Assembly Member John Biggs will be there so fair play for showing an interest (may just be an election stunt though). I'll keep you posted. Excuse for an early pint anyway!

Peckham,

Does Vinny still run it?

Used to drink in here every day, but haven't been in for years due to moving away.

Re: Duke of Wellington E1
I've no idea who runs it. Been in a few times, liked it, saw the story and thought would go on down as have an interest in preserving pubs and pub culture.

Dudley - Vinny still runs it. Absolute top bloke (and hammer to boot). He lives upstairs so is fighting to save his home as well as livelihood in the face of sharp business practices.

Anyhow there is some good people on board to help save the pub so there is a fighting chance we can prevail.

If anyone wants a pint in an unpretensious backstreet pub near the Liverpool St/City go down to find out more (plenty of racing on this week!)
